The absolute joy of the weekend, will, hopefully, not be frittered away in the first 5-10 minutes at work tomorrow. What a weekend. Two concerts with the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir, joined by the Sydney Detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band, under the auspices of DEFGLIS, The Defence Gay & Lesbian Information Service. I don't know whether auspices is the right word, but it'll do for here.
Last night's concert (Sat) and this afternoon's matinee (Sun) came about as a result of choir members wanting to work with (sing) a Defence Band, and to explore issues of commonality between the two groups. Our gorgeous Music Director, Googled the right words, and found DEFGLIS, an organisation of Defence personnel, striving to maintain, and improve issues of diversity for GLBTQI people within the Defence Force. A dinner was arranged last October and members of DEFGLIS met with members of the SGLC and DEFGLIS agreed to support our proposal, and initiated contact with the Sydney Detachment of the RAN Band. We've been rehearsing since the start of the year for this, and the band have been rehearsing as well, but last Thursday was our first joint rehearsal and we were all blown away (pardon the pun) by the sound and atmosphere the Navy band creates. I was lucky enough to have experienced this many times in my former career, but for the majority of choir members it was a first.
As indeed were the two concerts. The first time a GLBTQ choir has performed in concert in a joint collaboration in Australia, and possibly the world. Friendships were made and experiences swapped away from the rehearsal space and hopefully these concerts will be the start of a solid and interesting relationship between SGLC and the Australian Defence Force.
It was truly fantastic.
