Today, 31 Mar 2007, at 7.30pm Sydney, and hopefully other places, celebrated Earth Hour. The idea being to turn off the lights for one hour, to save electricity, to make a small step to conserving energy, which hopefully will lead to a giant leap, to save the planet for certain doom.
The icecaps are decreasing, the water is rising, island nations are gradually subsuming back into the ocean (look at Kiribati, - while you can). Still Governments are slow to act, The UK, Europe, the EU, and a lot of other countries are recognising there is a problem, but Australia, tied by the apron strings of gutless federal politicians to the USA, says "check out my new clothes, and while you're at it, check out the Emporers's". Witless facile, iditiotic politicians who don't give a tinker's cuss about the future of the planet, because it doesn't fit in with their immediate agenda.
Wake up Australian Federal Cabinet.
My contribution was to delay my usual Saturday afternoon drinks, and go into town to my estaminet of choice for a cleansing ale or three at 7.30. Candleight, good conversation, the World Swimming Championships on the TV, ambient light from the goldfish pond. What more can a koala bear.
